Yakult Singapore has confirmed that it will no longer be providing plastic straws with its range of prebiotic drinks. This is a move that will bring it in line with other countries where Yakult is sold without straws.

Announced on its Facebook page, the company has said the removal of the small plastic straws was a part of its efforts in contributing to environmental protection and sustainability. The decision, however, caused many within the social community to question the organisation – as its containers are still made of plastic.

Yakult Singapore has since told Channel News Asia that it is looking to remove plastic packaging altogether and is on the hunt for an alternative.

Yakult is a probiotic milk beverage fermented with the bacteria strain Lactobacillus paracasei Shirota, first isolated from the human intestine by Japanese scientist Minoru Shirota in the 1930s.
