UK’s first retailer to launch certified compostable carrier bags, confirms they’re rolling out permanently to all stores.

Back in 2018, the UK’s Co-Op supermarkets were the first to launch 100% compostable carrier bags across many of its stores. This month it has confirmed that the bags have proved to be a success with customers. As a result, they will be available from all stores across the country.

Compostable bags are made from potato starch and have a smoother texture than regular carriers. As they’re compostable they do not go into your regular recycling bin with the plastics, in fact, the final destination should be a compost heap or your food waste collection service.

To note, Co-op is not the only supermarket to trial compostable carrier bags. In 2019, German supermarket chain Aldi also announced it would be using paper and compostable bags in a number of its UK stores. We hope to hear that they follow Co-op’s lead and roll out to all stores and that other supermarkets follow.
